Kolkata woke up to cloudy skies on Thursday morning, but things turned intense by noon. The sky darkened, and light rain quickly escalated into heavy downpours across the city and its suburbs. This sudden burst of Kolkata rain has locals bracing for more, especially with Durga Puja celebrations winding down.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warns of heavy rain and thunderstorms hitting Kolkata and nearby districts in the coming hours. Expect gusty winds blowing at 30-40 km per hour, which could make streets slippery and travel tricky. Over in Howrah, North 24 Parganas, and South 24 Parganas, similar heavy showers loom, and the IMD has issued an orange warning for thunderstorms in these spots.
All this weather drama stems from a deep depression brewing in the Bay of Bengal. The system, which started as a depression in the west-central Bay of Bengal, has intensified and is heading northwest at about 17 km per hour. Right now, it’s positioned roughly 190 km south-southeast of Gopalpur in Odisha, 230 km south of Puri, and around 250 km east of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.
By Thursday night, this deep depression should make landfall between Gopalpur and Paradip along the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh coast. Its effects will keep south Bengal districts and Kolkata soaked with rain through Saturday, potentially disrupting idol immersions in the Hooghly River on Vijayadashami—the final day of Durga Puja.
The wet weather isn’t limited to the south. North Bengal faces heavy rain forecasts until Sunday. Districts like Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar could see downpours on Thursday and Friday, with an orange alert for very heavy rain on Saturday. North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, and Malda districts are also in line for heavy showers over those two days.
If you’re in West Bengal, stay updated on these Bay of Bengal weather updates and plan your Durga Puja festivities accordingly to avoid the worst of the storms.
