Bengaluru – Karnataka BJP president and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra said on Monday that he will visit Belagavi on Tuesday to show support for the sugarcane farmers who are still on strike there.
After a meeting of the BJP’s Chintan Varga group at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in Bengaluru, Vijayendra criticised the Congress‑led state government for ignoring the problems that farmers and rural communities face. He told reporters that growers from Belagavi, Bagalkot, Vijayapura and Uttara Kannada have been protesting for days, demanding fair prices and government help.
“The ministers don’t care about their demands,” Vijayendra said. “To stand with the farmers, I’ll join the protest in Belagavi tomorrow.”
He also pointed to the damage caused by heavy rains in the Kalyana Karnataka and Kittur Karnataka regions. Bikestruck, many farmers have lost crops. Vijayendra described visits to affected areas where district ministers were absent and other officials seemed indifferent. He urged the state to release relief immediately, but said ministers were instead sat in Bengaluru, blaming the centre for not transferring funds.
Vijayendra added that after two and a half years in power, the Congress government still hasn’t pumped water into tanks in Chamarajanagar. “The government shows complete apathy towards farmers’ problems, which is unacceptable,” he said.
He warned that party infighting over the chief minister’s post could worsen the situation. “Let’s see what happens in November,” Vijayendra said. “Meanwhile, the chief minister, deputy chief minister, agriculture minister and revenue minister must address the concerns of sugarcane growers and all farmers.”
When asked about Minister Priyank Kharge’s recent remarks about the RSS and the central government, Vijayendra criticised him for diverting attention from his department to broader politics. “Instead of focusing on his own responsibilities, Priyank Kharge drifts to national and RSS topics,” he said.
