Indore, Oct 6 – In a move that could shake up the city’s political landscape, BJP councillors of the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) voted to remove Congress member Anwar Qadri from office. The decision was taken at a party meeting led by Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava and district president Sumit Mishra.
The BJP team plans to bring the removal proposal to the IMC council house at the next meeting. Mishra told reporters that every BJP councillor will be present when the motion is tabled, ensuring a unanimous vote. “All BJP councillors have been instructed to be present in the House on the day the proposal to terminate Anwar Qadri will be placed,” he said.
Qadri, the elected representative for Ward 58, was arrested in late August after police linked him to a June case alleging he funneled money to minority community members. The case claims those members were involved in a ‘love‑jihad’ scheme—intended to target, sexually assault, and convert women from other communities. Two men were reportedly arrested on sixth‑grade charges of rape and attempted conversion; their statements named Qadri as a key supporter.
The criminal case began in mid‑June after a complaint was filed at Banganga police station. Qadri avoided arrest for more than two months, prompting police to offer a Rs 40,000 reward for his capture. He was finally taken in during the last week of August. His daughter has also been detained in Delhi on charges of helping him evade arrest.
The main opposition party in the IMC, Congress, has not yet released a formal response to the BJP’s proposal. The move could alter the balance of power in the municipal council, a question that remains on the minds of city residents and political observers alike.
