Mumbai authorities are urging districts across central Maharashtra, Konkan, and Vidarbha to gear up for heavy rainfall starting September 27. The State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) issued an advisory Friday, calling for immediate precautionary steps and readiness for rescue and relief efforts. This comes after the India Meteorological Department warned of intense downpours through September 29.
In districts under orange and red alerts, officials must act fast from September 27 to 29. Expect heavy to very heavy rain in parts of Madhya Maharashtra and Konkan during those days, with the peak on September 28. Vidarbha could see light to moderate showers on September 27, turning heavier in spots. Marathwada faces light to moderate rain from September 26 to 29, with heavier bursts likely on September 27 and 28.
The SEOC is also reaching out to residents with safety tips amid these flood risks in Maharashtra. Stick to official updates and ignore rumors. Steer clear of dangerous spots, flood-prone zones, and standing under trees during thunderstorms. Stock up on essentials to protect against floods, head to local shelters if needed, and skip unnecessary travel or tourism in bad weather. Never try crossing flooded roads or bridges with water rushing over them.
These warnings hit hard as the ongoing monsoon season has already brought tragedy. Heavy rains and floods have killed 86 people in eight Marathwada districts from June 1 to September 25. Nanded saw the most losses, with 26 deaths, followed by Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar at 15. Hingoli and Beed each reported 11 fatalities, Jalna had 7, Latur and Parbhani 6 each, and Dharashiv 4.
Animal losses add to the toll, with 1,725 deaths in Marathwada over the same period. Again, Nanded topped the list at 569.
Farmers face a tough blow too. Floods from heavy monsoon rains destroyed crops across 2,396,162.99 hectares in the region since June. Officials have assessed 75.95% of that—1,820,032.18 hectares—and confirmed 2,936,668 farmers affected in these eight districts. A total of 5,893 villages have suffered from the downpours and flooding.
