Manipur’s governor, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, announced on Saturday that the state will receive extra funding for the “Mama Gift” program, a nutrition project run by the Manipur State Rural Livelihoods Mission (MSRLM). The grant is aimed at expanding the reach and production of the locally made supplement that feeds displaced kids suffering from the recent ethnic violence.
“Mama Gift” is a ready‑to‑eat mix designed for infants and toddlers aged nine months and older. Doctors and nutritionists from the National Health Mission guided its recipe, which uses simple ingredients like wheat flour, roasted soybeans, chickpeas, milk powder and sugar. The mixture is mixed with warm water and served directly to children in relief camps.
Since it started in June 2023, the initiative has fed more than 1,000 children across nine districts, including Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Jiribam, Kakching, Tengnoupal and Kangpokpi. The MSRLM, working under the Rural Development and Panchayati Raj department, produces the supplement at the Lamyanbi Village Level Federation in Khurai.
Governor Bhalla praised the community effort behind “Mama Gift,” calling it a symbol of local care and resilience. He said the new funding from Raj Bhavan in Imphal is a modest but meaningful contribution to boost the program and encourage ongoing compassion.
Manipur has set up over 300 relief camps in the Imphal valley and surrounding hills to shelter more than 59,000 displaced families after the ethnic clashes that erupted in May 2023. The “Mama Gift” program is part of the state’s broader strategy to meet urgent nutritional needs in these camps and help children recover from the trauma of displacement.
