A man in Bengaluru is under arrest for trying to rape a disabled woman while he was under the influence of ganja. The incident happened on November 9 and only surfaced recently after neighbors saw the accused being beaten and the video spread online.
The victim is a young woman who is non‑verbal, has limited leg control and is considered developmentally a child. Her family had left the house for a wedding, leaving her alone. Around 11 a.m., the man burst into the apartment and locked the door from the inside. When the victim’s mother returned, she forced the door open to find her daughter badly hurt. The intruder fled as soon as the mother saw her.
Villagers heard the mother’s distress, chased the suspect, and beat him before handing him over to the police. The Adugodi Police quickly arrested the man, known as Vignesh or Dadu, and are still probing the case.
Bengaluru has seen a worrying rise in sexual assaults against vulnerable people. In August, a mentally challenged woman was reportedly gang‑raped in Hassan, Karnataka, with the attackers allegedly filming the crime. Earlier this year, two minors, one being mentally challenged, were also claimed to have been raped in the Raichur and Hassan districts. A standard‑level student in Manvi taluk was assaulted by a gang while walking to school by bus. These incidents underscore the urgent need for stronger protection for people with disabilities.
Police are continuing their investigation into the Bengaluru case while authorities review measures to prevent such attacks in the future.
