In Durgapur, West Bengal, a shocking gangrape incident on Friday night has sparked widespread outrage. A second‑year medical student from a private college was allegedly assaulted by a group of men, and the survivor is a girl from Jaleswar, Odisha.
National Commission for Women (NCW) member Archana Majumdar flew to the city on October 12 to look into the case after her chairperson asked her to take suo motu cognisance. “I went straight to the place, met the victim, talked with her family and the local students,” Majumdar said. She met police officials, including the Superintendent of Police and the officer‑in‑charge, and promised to submit a report the following workday.
Police reports say the police have identified five suspects, arrested three, and are preparing a chargesheet. Medical samples were collected and sent to the State Forensic Lab; experts recommend forwarding them to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory. “Justice for women in West Bengal is delayed,” Majumdar said. She also noted that the victim’s friend and the arrested suspects belong to the same community, raising questions about the influence of local networks.
On Sunday a local court remanded the three arrested men to 10 days of police custody. The case has drawn sharp political commentary: the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has criticized the Mamata Banerjee government for failing to protect women, while the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) accused the BJP of politicizing the tragedy.
The incident highlights an urgent need for stronger law‑enforcement response and faster judicial action in West Bengal. The NCW will publish its findings soon, and authorities say they will file the chargesheet as soon as possible.
