India’s livestock and dairy sector gets a big boost in New Delhi.
On Oct. 11 the government handed over ₹947 crore in new projects and laid the foundation stone for another ₹219 crore project. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the ceremony, showing how the country is investing in animal husbandry, dairying and related jobs.
Why it matters
The move is part of a wider package to strengthen rural incomes and push India toward self‑reliance in agriculture.
Alongside the two new farming schemes – the Pradhan Mantri Dhan Dhanya Yojana (PM‑DDKY) and the Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses – the dairy investments aim to give farmers higher earnings even when crop production is low.
PM Modi’s key points
Modi highlighted how livestock helps keep rural families secure. He noted that the PM‑DDKY has already administered more than 125 million free vaccines that protect animals from diseases such as foot‑and‑mouth disease. Healthy animals mean fewer worries for farmers.
He also stressed the need for diversification. “When fields can’t produce, animal husbandry and fish farming become alternatives,” he said, urging more work in cattle, fish and beekeeping.

Over 38,000 MAITRIs have now been inducted nationwide, helping spread modern techniques and improve livestock genetics.
Bottom line
India is pouring money into its livestock and dairy backbone, creating jobs, boosting farmer incomes, and improving food security. These new facilities, schools and training programs make rural life easier, give farmers more income choices, and help the country achieve nutritional and economic goals.
