The National Peoples Party (NPP) in Meghalaya and the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) in Tripura are planning to join forces in a new regional platform that will focus on the rights of indigenous people across Northeast India.
The move comes as the NPP, led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, and TMP chief Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma gather support from other tribal leaders and regional parties. TMP activists say the coalition will also bring in former BJP national spokesperson and Nagaland minister Mmhonlumo Kikon, People’s Party founder Daniel Langthasa from Assam’s Dima Hasao, and prominent leaders from Nagaland, Manipur and other states.
Both the NPP and TMP are currently allied with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Despite this, the parties are looking to create a new platform that promotes Northeast unity and safeguards tribal interests. TMP president Debbarma, who recently attended the oath‑taking of Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) President Hagrama Mohilary as Chief Executive Member of the Bodoland Territorial Council, stressed the need for a united front among Northeastern states.
The NPP and TMP leaders are set to brief the media at the Constitution Club in New Delhi on Tuesday, where they will announce their future plans and mission. The new alliance could reshape the political landscape of Tripura and other tribal‑majority regions.
Background on TMP and politics in Tripura
TMP joined the BJP‑led government after a tripartite agreement on March 2, 2024, bringing 13 of its MLAs into the cabinet. Since 2021, TMP has governed the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), which covers about 84 % of Tripura’s population and is home to more than 12 lakh tribal residents.
The party has staged several demonstrations in Tripura, including a city‑wide protest in Delhi on September 9. TMP’s agenda focuses on implementing the tripartite accord and removing illegal migrants. Recent clashes between TMP activists and BJP workers have seen injuries to over 20 BJP members.
Upcoming elections and coalition dynamics
With elections to the TTAADC approaching next year, the BJP and TMP are preparing separate campaigns to win tribal communities’ support. The new NPP‑TMP platform could draw in other regional parties, potentially influencing future elections in Meghalaya, Tripura, Nagaland, Manipur and beyond.
