On October 2, Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored Mahatma Gandhi, the beloved ‘Father of the Nation,’ and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on their birth anniversaries. Modi pledged that India will keep following their paths to build a self-reliant and developed nation, or ‘Atmanirbhar’ and ‘Viksit Bharat.’
Modi visited Raj Ghat in New Delhi to lay floral tributes at Gandhi’s memorial. Gandhi Jayanti marks the anniversary of Gandhi’s birth in 1869 and celebrates his lifelong dedication to truth, non-violence, and social justice. The day also shines as the International Day of Non-Violence, inspiring people around the world with Gandhi’s ideas of peace and ethical living.
In a post on X, Modi shared his thoughts on Gandhi, whom he called ‘Bapu.’ “Gandhi Jayanti is about paying homage to the extraordinary life of beloved Bapu, whose ideals transformed the course of human history,” Modi wrote. “He demonstrated how courage and simplicity could become instruments of great change. He believed in the power of service and compassion as essential means of empowering people. We will keep following his path in our quest to build a Viksit Bharat.”
Modi also remembered Shastri, born on the same day in 1904 in Mughalsarai, Uttar Pradesh. Shastri became India’s second prime minister in 1964 after Jawaharlal Nehru’s death. He’s best known for his famous slogan ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan,’ which honors soldiers and farmers and still fires up patriotism today. Shastri stood out for his humility, honesty, and close connection to everyday Indians, shaping the country’s politics and society in lasting ways.
On X, Modi praised Shastri as “an extraordinary statesman whose integrity, humility and determination strengthened India, including during challenging times. He personified exemplary leadership, strength and decisive action.” Modi added, “His clarion call of ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan’ ignited a spirit of patriotism among our people. He continues to motivate us in the endeavour of building a strong and self-reliant India.”
