At around 6:30 a.m. on Monday, a bus from Tandur was carrying about 70 passengers toward Hyderabad when it was struck in a head‑on collision by a concrete truck on the Hyderabad–Bijapur highway near Mirzaguda in Chevella mandal, about 60 km from the city. The impact tore the bus open, and the truck’s gravel load spilled into the vehicle. The crash left 18 people dead—including drivers of both vehicles, a 10‑month‑old baby and her mother—and left several others badly hurt.

President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi both voiced their sorrow on Monday. In a short message on X, the President said, “The loss of many lives in a bus accident in the Ranga Reddy district of Telangana is deeply unfortunate. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.” The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) added that each surviving family would receive an ex‑gratia payment of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF), and injured victims would get ₹50 000 to help with medical costs.

The bus was a Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) vehicle that had departed at 5 a.m. from Tandur, filled to capacity by the time it reached Vikarabad. Survivor accounts say the truck was speeding when it collided with the front of the bus, crushing passengers in the first six rows.

Rescue crews faced a difficult task cutting through concrete‑laden wreckage. Three bulldozers were used to open the broken bus and extract bodies and injured passengers, who were then taken to the government hospital in Chevella. Three injured people remain in critical condition.

Local authorities have responded with urgency. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy ordered officials to arrive immediately, to keep him informed, and to shift all injured people to Hyderabad for the best medical care. He also instructed the district collector to intensify rescue and relief work. Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar guided teams to launch relief measures and provide top‑quality treatment for the wounded.

The tragedy highlights the danger of road traffic accidents in Telangana and the need for stronger safety measures. The government’s promise of financial aid reflects a commitment to support families who lost loved ones and to care for those left injured. We hope the surviving passengers recover safely and that lessons learned from this bus accident will help prevent future tragedies on India’s highways.
