President Droupadi Murmu shared her deep sorrow over the tragic stampede at actor-turned-politician Vijay’s rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu. The incident during the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) event has claimed more than 29 lives, leaving families heartbroken.
In a late Saturday post on X, formerly Twitter, Murmu said she’s anguished by the “tragic loss of lives” in the Tamil Nadu stampede. She offered her deepest condolences to the grieving families and wished a speedy recovery for the injured.
Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi echoed the pain, calling the loss of innocent lives—including children—”deeply painful.” He extended heartfelt condolences and prayers for those hurt in the Karur tragedy.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the news “deeply saddening” and pledged support for the families and victims. He also sent prayers for the injured.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh described the Vijay rally stampede as “heartbreaking” and offered his condolences while hoping for quick healing for survivors.
Former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami of AIADMK labeled the event “shocking and painful.” He urged the Tamil Nadu government to provide compensation and full medical help to those affected.
Actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam leader Kamal Haasan said his “heart trembles” at the news. He called on authorities to ensure proper treatment and relief for those caught in the crowd crush.
Superstar Rajinikanth posted on X about the “immense grief” from losing innocent lives in the Karur incident. He sent his deepest condolences to the families.
Tamil Nadu Congress leaders expressed their sorrow and rallied party workers to assist the injured and their loved ones.
On the other hand, former BJP state president K. Annamalai slammed the DMK government and state police for the crowd control failure. He demanded a thorough investigation into the emergency response lapses during the TVK rally.
Police sources revealed that TVK had requested permission for a roadshow expecting just 10,000 attendees. Their September 25 letter included an engineer’s plan for a venue holding up to 60,000 people. But the actual turnout exploded far beyond that, sparking the deadly crush in Karur.
Rescue teams and medical staff are still working hard on the ground. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin plans to visit Karur soon to meet survivors and review the situation in the wake of this Tamil Nadu tragedy.
