PM Modi Ushers in New Era for Mizoram with Bairabi-Sairang Rail Line Inauguration
Aizawl, Mizoram – In a big boost for the Northeast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Mizoram’s first railway line, the Bairabi-Sairang stretch, on Saturday. This game-changing project, costing over Rs 8,070 crore, now links the hill state to the rest of India, making travel faster and easier.
Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw couldn’t hold back his praise for PM Modi’s leadership during a lively public meeting in Aizawl. "Today, Mizoram’s capital gets its railway connection – a historic moment for all of us!" he said, cheering the thousands gathered. He highlighted the tough challenges in building this 19-km line, which snakes through the Himalayan terrain with 45 tunnels and 55 major bridges. "One bridge here even towers over Delhi’s Qutub Minar," Vaishnaw added, crediting Modi’s strong vision and commitment to Mizoram for turning this dream into reality.
The excitement peaked as PM Modi flagged off three new express trains to connect Mizoram with key cities. These include the Rajdhani Express from Sairang (near Aizawl) to Delhi’s Anand Vihar Terminal, the Mizoram Express to Guwahati, and the Kolkata-Mizoram Express to Kolkata. Vaishnaw explained how this railway connectivity will open up Mizoram’s stunning natural beauty to the world. "Tourism will boom, homestays will thrive, and new jobs will pop up everywhere," he said.
But it’s not just about passengers – cargo operations kick off this week too. "We’ll slash costs for cement and steel, speed up deliveries of essentials, and even add refrigerated coaches," Vaishnaw shared. This means local gems like turmeric, ginger, and unique Mizoram fruits can reach bigger markets, boosting the economy.
Vaishnaw also spotlighted the Centre’s Act East Policy, which has supercharged rail development in the Northeast. "Before 2014, the railway budget for the region was just Rs 2,000 crore. Under Modi ji, it’s jumped five-fold to Rs 10,000 crore, with Rs 77,000 crore worth of projects under construction now." He tied it back to PM Modi’s mantra of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, and Sabka Prayas – all about inclusive growth for every corner of India.
On top of the rail launch, PM Modi laid the foundation stones for key road projects, including the Aizawl Bypass Road, Thenzawl-Sialsuk Road, and Khankawn-Rongura Road. These moves promise smoother connectivity and faster growth for Mizoram, putting the Northeast firmly on India’s development map.
