Chandigarh – On Monday, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale met with the family of the late Haryana IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar in Chandigarh. The meeting was an emotional call for justice and a stand against caste‑based harassment. Athawale said he assured the family that the government would act and that the District/State Police leaders, DGP Shatrujeet Singh Kapur and former Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya, would face action.
“He keeps saying that the case is still open and that our conscience is awake,” Athawale told reporters. “The family says Puran Kumar was harassed by his seniors and dragged to blame for others’ mistakes. We’re with them. They want the DGP and the ex‑SP held accountable.”
The minister also planned a meeting with Haryana Chief Minister Nitish Saini, saying that the CM would discuss the matter. He added that Puran Kumar came from a Dalit background and that caste discrimination is a “big problem”. “Even after 75 years of independence, the Constitution created by Bhimrao Ambedkar is still insulted,” Athawale said.
Alongside Athawale, former minister Ravneet Singh Bittu met the family too. “The Haryana CM has promised a major decision on this case,” Bittu told reporters after the visit.
Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, is scheduled to pay his respects at Puran Kumar’s home in Chandigarh on Tuesday evening. The opposition leader will arrive at 5:15 p.m. to meet the widow, Amneet P. Kumar, a senior IAS officer.
The family has refused a post‑mortem or funeral rites until the arrest of DGP Shatrujeet Kapur, former Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya and other officers named in Puran Kumar’s “final note.” The note, left behind after the officer’s suicide on October 7, called for the dismissal of nine serving IPS officers, a retired IPS officer, and three retired IAS officers, accusing them of caste‑based discrimination.
Puran Kumar applied a service revolver at his Chandigarh residence and left a written note before his death. Seven days later, his body remains in the mortuary, and his cremation has not yet taken place. The widow, a senior bureaucrat, has written a confidential, urgent letter to CM Nitish Saini, demanding justice for her husband. She accused the Haryana government of “administrative inaction” and “grave injustice.”
Haryana’s opposition leader Bhupinder Hooda spoke at a rally in Rohtak, saying that “the only demand is that the guilty be punished.” He urged the government to fulfill its responsibility and bring those responsible to justice.
The case of Y. Puran Kumar has spotlighted systemic caste discrimination within the Haryana Police and drawn the attention of national leaders. As the investigation continues, the broader public remains eager for a clear outcome and measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
