On Monday, the Supreme Court will hear a suo‑motu case about the fatal Phalodi road accident that shocked Rajasthan.
A bench of Justices J.K. Maheshwari and Vijay Bishnoi will sit on the matter titled “In Re: Phalodi Accident.”
The crash happened last week near Matoda village in Jodhpur district. A tempo traveller carrying a group of pilgrims from Sursagar, Jodhpur, slammed into a stationary trailer truck while returning from Kolayat in Bikaner. The front of the tempo shattered, and rescue teams struggled for hours to free trapped passengers.
Police have confirmed 18 deaths, including four children and ten women. Many others sustained serious and minor injuries.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the incident “deeply saddening.” He announced ex‑gratia payments of ₹2 lakh for each family of a deceased passenger and ₹50,000 for injured victims from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.
Rajasthan’s Chief Minister, Bhajan Lal Sharma, expressed deep grief and ordered rapid medical care for the injured. The state government set a ₹10 lakh compensation for each bereaved family, raising the amount to ₹25 lakh for families who lost three or more members. Those seriously injured receive ₹2 lakh, and those with minor injuries receive ₹1 lakh.
The tragedy raises fresh concerns over road safety on the Bharatmala Expressway. Residents blame poor lighting, inadequate signage, and illegal parking of heavy trucks for making night travel dangerous. They say truck drivers often stop along the expressway to rest, setting the stage for fatal crashes.
