Athletes from 27 states and 11 countries gathered in Srinagar to kick off the Kashmir Marathon 2025, the region’s biggest sporting event after the Pahalgam tragedy. The race started early Sunday morning at 6 a.m. from Polo View on Residency Road, with runners charting a scenic path along the famous Dal Lake.
Organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Department of Tourism together with the Sports Council, the marathon offered both a full 42‑km and a half 21‑km distance. More than 1,500 participants, including runners from Germany, Denmark, the United States, Ethiopia, Kenya, Japan and Sri Lanka, streamed along Boulevard Road, circling the lake and the Zabarwan Range.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah led the kick‑off ceremony, joined by senior police officers and Bollywood celebrities who cheered the runners. Officials said the event sends a strong message of peace: “Terrorism cannot break Kashmir’s resolve to move forward.” The tourism team highlighted the marathon as a celebration of the valley’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.
The route features iconic sights such as the Shankaracharya Temple, Pari Mahal, and Dargah Shrine, plus the lush Mughal Gardens set against the changing colors of Chinar trees. Foreign athletes called the trail one of the most beautiful marathon routes in the world.
Winners compete for a total prize pool of ₹25 lakh, while participants experience a blend of history, scenery and friendly hospitality. The Kashmir Marathon 2025 promises an unforgettable, immersive run through the heart of the world‑famous valley.
