Union Minister Suresh Gopi, a popular actor from Kerala, told a crowd in Kannur on Tuesday that he wants to return to the film industry. He said the ministerial job has cut his earnings sharply and he needs the income that acting can bring.
“I really want to keep acting. My money stopped when I became a minister,” the former cinema star said. Gopi added that he had never aspired to be a minister. “Just before the elections, I told reporters I didn’t want a ministerial post; I wanted to keep making movies,” he recalled.
Gopi is the youngest BJP member of Parliament and suggested that Rajya Sabha MP C Sadanandan Master be made his replacement as Union Minister. President Droupadi Murmu recently nominated Master, a veteran from Kannur, to the Rajya Sabha.
During the address, Gopi defended his use of the word “prajā” to describe his constituents in Thrissur. He said critics twisted the term and “people keep twisting and misinterpreting what I say.” The minister pointed to the example of sanitation workers who were once called manual scavengers but are now “sanitation engineers” to show how language can change.
Suresh Gopi’s comments come as he balances his roles in government—he serves as Union Minister of State for Petroleum & Natural Gas and also oversees Tourism—while still maintaining a huge fan base in Indian cinema.
