Tripura CM Urges Respect for Sanitation Workers During Swachhata Hi Seva Launch
In Agartala, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha kicked off the Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) programme on Wednesday, calling on everyone to give sanitation workers the respect they deserve. He highlighted how these unsung heroes keep our cities and neighborhoods clean and healthy, playing a key role in public health just like frontline workers.
Speaking at the launch event held at the iconic Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhawan, CM Saha praised Tripura’s progress in cleanliness drives. Out of 765 Open Defecation Free (ODF) villages, 762 now stand as ODF Plus model villages—a big win for the state. "Tripura earned national recognition for its excellent solid and liquid waste management," he added proudly.
This is the 9th edition of the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign, which started nationwide on Wednesday to mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 75th birthday. The 15-day drive runs until October 2, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti and Lal Bahadur Shastri’s birth anniversary. Jointly run by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, SHS 2025 brings together citizens, communities, and institutions for hands-on cleanliness efforts. The focus? Tackling "Cleanliness Target Units"—those dark, dirty, and forgotten spots that need urgent attention—to spark a nationwide movement for better hygiene.
CM Saha shared more good news: Tripura already has five rural plastic waste management units up and running, with plans to add more soon. He encouraged people to dedicate at least one hour a day to cleaning activities during this Swachhata Hi Seva fortnight. "Let’s get students and youth involved too," he said. To spread the word, the programme includes fun events like debates, painting competitions, and cultural shows to raise awareness on waste management and cleanliness.
Joining the Chief Minister at the event were Higher Education, Panchayat & General Administration Minister Kishor Barman and Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumder.
On a personal note, CM Saha took to social media to wish Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his 75th birthday. In a heartfelt post, he wrote: "Dearest Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji, Happy 75th Birthday… Your heart beats with the pulse of Bharat, a sacred flame igniting hope, pride, and dreams in every Indian’s soul. For 75 years, you’ve lived as a true son of Maa Bharti, dedicating your life to her glory. Your visionary leadership has woven a tapestry of progress. Digital India has connected our farthest corners, Atmanirbhar Bharat has empowered us to stand tall, and Viksit Bharat is our collective dream taking shape under your unwavering guidance. May Maa Tripura Sundari shower you with divine strength, wisdom, and boundless energy to lead Bharat to new horizons. You are our pride, our ‘yug purush’, our guiding star. Here’s to a long life devoted to our motherland."
