Bihar Congress Faces Backlash Over AI Video Mocking PM Modi’s Late Mother
The Bihar Congress is in hot water after sharing an AI-generated video on social media that shows characters looking like Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother, Heeraben. On Friday, the party kicked off an internal probe to find out who made and posted the clip, promising to take action against those responsible.
The video, which lasted just 36 seconds, hit social media on Wednesday. It clearly marks itself as "AI GENERATED" and depicts a dream sequence where a figure resembling Heeraben scolds the PM for using her name in election campaigns. The clip also takes a dig at alleged "vote chori" or vote theft tactics by the BJP.
BJP leaders didn’t hold back, slamming the video as a "new low" in Indian politics. They called it unethical for mocking a deceased parent and disrespecting motherhood. BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla fired off on X (formerly Twitter), saying, "This party has become ‘Gaaliwadi’ instead of ‘Gandhiwadi.’ Far from remorse, Congress justified the abuse of the PM’s mother with lies." He labeled the video "disgusting" and "shameful."
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju echoed the anger, pointing out that Congress hasn’t learned from public rejections and has lost its moral ground. He predicted more electoral defeats for the party. JD-U MLC and spokesperson Neeraj Kumar went further, accusing Congress of "social prejudice" in politics. "Has such an infection spread that they created an AI video of the Prime Minister’s deceased mother, that too during Pitru Paksha? Such comments are an insult to our ancestors. The Congress has reached the pinnacle of shamelessness," he said.
This isn’t the first controversy. BJP MP Anurag Thakur from Hamirpur linked it to earlier abusive slogans against Heeraben during a Congress-RJD "Voter Adhikar Yatra" in Darbhanga. Bihar Police arrested Mohammad Rizvi alias Raja in late August for those remarks targeting PM Modi and his mother. Thakur called the AI video an "insult" to Bihar’s cultural heritage and said voters would give a "befitting reply" through EVMs in the upcoming elections.
Congress leaders, however, defended the clip as satire aimed at campaign strategies, not a personal attack. They accused the BJP of trying to silence opposition voices ahead of the polls. Congress leader Pawan Khera put it bluntly: "It is the duty of parents to educate their children. She (PM Modi’s late mother) is only educating her child, and if the child thinks that it is disrespectful towards him, it is his headache."
Even as the internal inquiry gets underway, Congress is pushing back, claiming the BJP’s outrage is just political drama to distract from real issues like Bihar’s rural problems. With Bihar Assembly elections expected later this year, this row could heat up the political scene even more.
