In Durgapur, West Bengal, a second‑year medical student from Jaleswar, Odisha, was allegedly gang‑raped on Sunday, prompting a strong response from top officials.
Union Women and Child Development Minister Annpurna Devi condemned the brutal attack. She said the government will act once the National Women Commission (NCW) finishes its investigation. “The NCW has gone there and is gathering information,” she told . “We want action taken,” she added, urging West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to step in and use strict measures. “Checking the security setup in the college and whether CCTV cameras are working is essential,” Annpurna said.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reacted quickly. She said she was shocked by the incident and pledged “strong action” against the attackers. Banerjee also told colleges to keep girls indoors at night over safety concerns. “Private medical colleges must protect their students, especially girls,” she said. Three men have already been arrested and brought before the court. Banerjee warned that anyone found guilty will be punished sharply.
Police updates confirm that three suspects were arrested and have been forwarded to the court today. Asansol Durgapur Police Commissioner DCP Abhishek Gupta said the investigation continues and everything is proceeding according to protocol.
The student’s father tells a sad story. His daughter went out with a classmate for a bite to eat. Two or three men who were in the area allegedly jumped on her. The classmate left her alone and fled. The NCW has taken cognizance of the case and is working to bring the perpetrators to justice.
This case highlights ongoing concerns over safety for female students in India’s night‑time campus environments. The government’s response, the NMCC’s investigation, and the swift police arrests show it is taking the matter seriously. Regular updates will follow as the case moves through the legal system.
