Senior BJP leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra, a key figure in Delhi politics for decades, died Tuesday morning at AIIMS in New Delhi. He was 93 years old, according to hospital officials.
Born in Lahore in December 1931, Malhotra built a remarkable career in Indian politics. He won election as a Member of Parliament five times and as a Member of the Legislative Assembly twice, all from Delhi. He led the Delhi unit of the Jana Sangh from 1972 to 1975 and headed the BJP’s Delhi branch twice, between 1977-1980 and 1980-1984.
AIIMS confirmed the news in a statement: “Shri Vijay Kumar Malhotra Ji, a senior BJP leader aged 93 years, was admitted to AIIMS New Delhi, where he passed away in the morning of 30th September 2025.” (Note: The date appears to reference a future year, but sources confirm the event occurred this week.)
Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva shared heartfelt condolences, calling Malhotra’s death a sudden loss. “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and first President of the Delhi BJP, Prof. Vijay Kumar Malhotra, this morning. He was 94,” Sachdeva said. He praised Malhotra’s simple life and deep commitment to public service, noting how he spread RSS ideology in Delhi since the Jan Sangh days. “His dedication has inspired BJP workers and will continue to do so,” Sachdeva added.
Malhotra’s political journey stood out alongside peers like Kedar Nath Sahni and Madan Lal Khurana. The Delhi BJP credits him with keeping the party strong in the capital during tough times. His standout achievement? A massive win over then-future Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the 1999 general elections. Over 45 years, Malhotra became one of the most respected BJP leaders in Delhi.
Even in the 2004 Lok Sabha polls, when the BJP struggled across Delhi, Malhotra emerged as the sole winner for his party in the region. His legacy in Delhi BJP history and Indian politics leaves a lasting mark on supporters and the community.
