The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has asked India’s Supreme Court to set up an independent probe into the 41‑person death stampede that occurred at actor‑turned‑politician Vijay’s rally in Karur district on September 27.
TVK’s lawyers—Dixita Gohil, Pranjal Agarwal and Yash S Vijay—filed the petition on October 8, requesting that a former Supreme Court judge lead the investigation. The request comes after the Madras High Court approved a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by the Inspector General of Police, a move that TVK says is not impartial.
### Why TVK wants an external probe
* The High Court questioned the police’s independence earlier, but still put a state police‑led team in charge.
* TVK argues that a team made only of Tamil Nadu Police officers is biased after the court’s own remarks about police impartiality.
* The party says that a possible “pre‑planned conspiracy” to stir trouble at the rally cannot be ruled out.
* TVK also says the High Court’s observations about its leaders fleeing the scene are false and unfairly damaged the party’s reputation.
### What the High Court ordered
On October 3, the High Court directed the creation of the SIT to investigate the tragedy and ordered a halt to political rallies, road shows and similar public events on state and national highways until proper standard operating procedures are issued.
The court heavily criticized TVK workers for allegedly failing to rescue people during the crush and questioned the state government’s approach to holding the event organisers accountable.
### Where we stand now
– The Supreme Court will hear an appeal on Friday, October 10, about the High Court’s dismissal of a prior request for a CBI investigation.
– TVK’s plea stresses the need for a thorough, impartial investigation to uncover the real causes of the stampede and protect the rights of those involved.
As this legal battle continues, the public and media alike watch every court decision, hoping for transparency and accountability over the tragic event that claimed 41 lives.
