Heavy rains hit Jammu and Kashmir, causing rivers to rise and flood alerts to be issued. Several rivers in Jammu, Udhampur, Samba, and Kathua districts have crossed the danger level, prompting authorities to take action.
The Tawi River in Udhampur and the Basantar River in Samba, along with the Uhj River in Kathua, all exceeded flood alert levels. Due to this, all government and private schools in Jammu division will remain closed on September 3, and exams scheduled for Wednesday have been canceled.
The Jammu and Kashmir Board of Secondary Education announced that Class 10 and 11 exams in the region are canceled to ensure student safety. The NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) has been deployed at the Tawi Bridge in Jammu to keep people safe and warn residents to stay away from riverbanks.
The weather forecast predicts heavy rainfall across Jammu and Kashmir over the next two days. Some areas in Jammu could experience very heavy rains, which may cause water levels in rivers and streams to rise further. In Kashmir, rains are expected but at a lower intensity compared to Jammu. The Jhelum River’s water level is also likely to increase.
The Meteorological Department warns of potential hazards like flash floods, landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones, especially in vulnerable areas. Authorities in Srinagar have been alerted and are closely monitoring the weather for the next 15-30 days.
Srinagar Deputy Commissioner Akshay Labroo advised residents to follow safety advisories carefully. “We are on high alert. Yesterday, we warned about strong winds, and residents should stay away from electric cables and poles,” he said. The administration plans to keep issuing safety updates to protect everyone.
Currently, the water levels in Jhelum and other water bodies remain below danger marks. However, officials urge locals to stay alert and take precautions until the weather stabilizes.
