The Congress party said on Tuesday that the Kerala government helped hide the Sabarimala gold heist, pointing to CPI‑M leaders who allegedly protected the crime.
At 8 p.m. on Tuesday, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the Kerala High Court arrested N. Vasu, the third accused in the gold theft case. Vasu was taken to a local court in Pathanamthitta and is now in judicial custody until November 24.
A.P. Anil Kumar, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) working president and a Member of the Legislative Assembly, accused the CPI‑M of “direct political patronage” in the smuggling of gold from the Devaswom Board. He said Vasu was “not an outsider but a loyal CPI‑M worker who held key posts from the Nayanar era to the current Pinarayi Vijayan administration.”
Anil Kumar added that Vasu linked CPI‑M officials to the gold heist, damaging the state’s reputation. He also named former Devaswom Minister Kadakampally Surendran and current Minister V.N. Vasavan as possible conspirators who should be investigated.
The Congress leader warned that the CPI‑M is shielding those involved. He said the truth only surfaced because the investigation was overseen directly by the Kerala High Court, and he called for Vasavan to resign immediately from the cabinet.
Anil Kumar suggested that CPI‑M’s attacks on the court show the party fears the probe could implicate top leaders. “The UDF has always said this is a regime of looters,” he said, saying recent developments prove the claim.
