Moscow—Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov accused European countries on Thursday of pushing Ukraine’s government in Kyiv to keep fighting Russia, blocking any chance for peace talks.
“European nations are pulling out all the stops to urge the Kyiv regime to stay in the fight,” Peskov said. “This is stopping them from sitting down for real negotiations.” He stressed that Europe’s push has ramped up tensions in the Russia-Ukraine war to the max.
Peskov argued that without Europe’s backing, Kyiv would likely take a different path. Drawing on history, he called out Europe’s talk of building new walls as pointless. “They’re painting Russia as the bad guy,” he added, “which is why they’re set to boost military spending big time.”
In the bigger picture, Peskov said Europe is the main roadblock to a peaceful end to the Ukraine conflict. He pointed to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent peace push, which he says has run into “European militarism.” Still, Peskov noted that Washington shows real political will to shift the situation toward diplomacy, and Russia is keeping that in mind.
Russia, Peskov explained, is focused on protecting its interests for future generations. The country plans to continue its special military operation in Ukraine but stays open to talks.
This comes after Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Alaska in August. They made some headway on the Ukraine crisis, but no agreement came out of it. Peskov mentioned that Putin is ready to host Trump in Moscow, leaving the ball in the U.S. court’s.
