Cairo, Egypt – 12 October 2024 –
An international peace summit is set to begin in Sharm el‑Sheikh, Egypt, on Monday. The meeting, called the Sharm el‑Sheikh Peace Summit, will bring together leaders from more than 20 countries, including the United States and Egypt, to finalize a deal that could end the war in Gaza.
U.S. President Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el‑Sisi will chair the talks. They hope the summit will not only stop fighting in the Gaza Strip but also bring broader stability to the Middle East.
The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas went into effect Friday after three days of hard negotiations in Sharm el‑Sheikh. The deal, mediated by Egypt, Qatar, Turkey and the United States, calls for Israeli forces to pull back from key Gaza towns—Gaza City, Rafah, Khan Younis and northern areas—while opening five crossings for aid, and releasing hostages and prisoners.
A Hamas source said the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt should reopen by mid‑next week, allowing limited movement of people, but official details on the operation still haven’t been released.
Gaza authorities report that more than 67,000 people have been killed in the past two years of Israeli military operations, and the area now faces severe shortages of food and medicine.
In Israel, a large crowd gathered at Tel Aviv’s Hostage Square on Saturday to welcome families of captives who have been freed thanks to the new agreement. The event was a powerful moment of gratitude and solidarity, said Steve Witkoff, the U.S. Middle East envoy. He praised President Trump, his son‑in‑law Jared Kushner, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for their roles in achieving the ceasefire and hostage‑release deal.
The crowd, numbering more than 100,000, chanted “Thank you, Trump” as they celebrated the day. When Witkoff mentioned Netanyahu, some boos broke out, according to The Times of Israel.
French President Emmanuel Macron is scheduled to travel to Egypt on Monday to show support for the ceasefire and discuss next steps in the peace plan. His visit comes as global leaders rally around the goal of ending the conflict and building a lasting peace in the region.
Next week, several world leaders are expected in Egypt. The U.S. President’s summit in Sharm el‑Sheikh aims to cement this breakthrough and lay the groundwork for a more peaceful future.
