Rain forecast for Kolkata from Saturday, may play spoilsport during Durga Puja

Kolkata residents, get ready for some rain this weekend. A new low-pressure area is brewing over the Bay of Bengal, and it could bring scattered showers to the city starting Saturday, just as Durga Puja kicks off.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) shared the update on Thursday, warning of ongoing thunderstorms and lightning across south Bengal districts, including Kolkata, through Sunday. Good news? Heavy downpours look unlikely until Saturday.

Here’s the breakdown: A cyclonic circulation near the Myanmar coast in the Bay of Bengal is drifting westward. It will likely form a low-pressure area in the north Bay of Bengal today, strengthening into a depression by Friday. By Saturday, it might make landfall along the south Odisha coast, triggering light to moderate rain in south Bengal spots like Kolkata.

IMD officials also eye another possible cyclonic system in the Bay of Bengal around Ashtami on September 30. That could spark renewed thunderstorms starting October 1, though it’s too early to map its exact path.

Rain chances ramp up from Friday in key areas: Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore, Jhargram, and Bankura. Saturday might see heavier rain in South 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore, and Jhargram.

Thunderstorms will stick around in all southern districts until Sunday, paired with gusty winds blowing 30 to 40 kilometers per hour. Keep an umbrella handy if you’re out for Puja prep.

Up north in Bengal, things stay mostly dry for now. Expect only light rain with thundershowers and lightning at a few spots. Thursday could see showers in Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, and North Dinajpur. Cooch Behar faces a rain alert on Friday, and all north Bengal districts might get wet on Saturday—no heavy rain expected, though.

For context, Kolkata’s morning minimum temperature hit 26.4 degrees Celsius today. Stay tuned to IMD updates for the latest on this Bay of Bengal weather system and West Bengal rain forecasts.
