Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has shared his deep grief over the tragic deaths of at least 19 people during a massive Gen-Z led protest against corruption and the social media ban in Kathmandu and other cities. The protests, driven by young Nepalis fed up with graft and online restrictions, turned violent after unknown groups allegedly infiltrated the crowds, sparking vandalism, arson, and fierce clashes with security forces.

In a heartfelt statement, PM Oli said, “I’m extremely saddened that citizens lost their lives in today’s protest. I extend my deepest condolences to the families and relatives who lost their loved ones in this unimaginable incident.” He quickly moved to form a high-level probe committee to dig into what happened and why the peaceful demonstration spiraled into bloodshed. A senior cabinet minister revealed that a late-night meeting decided on this step, giving the committee 15 days to submit its report.

PM Oli also addressed the hot-button issue of the social media ban, which has fueled public anger across Nepal. He clarified that the government never planned to shut down platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and X (formerly Twitter). “The government had not, and does not, adopt any policy to shut down social media,” he emphasized. Instead, the recent deactivation followed a Supreme Court order requiring these platforms to register in Nepal to comply with local laws.

The Prime Minister pointed fingers at “various vested interests” for infiltrating the anti-corruption protest and turning it violent. He noted that even the organizers had called the event a success and asked people to head home, but these outsiders triggered the chaos with acts of vandalism and arson.

Interestingly, while many hoped the cabinet would lift the social media ban amid rising unrest, PM Oli’s strong opposition blocked that move. Yet, in a surprise twist, the platforms started working again late at night without any official word from the government. Earlier, top leaders from the ruling Nepali Congress had pushed hard for the ban’s removal, highlighting the growing public frustration.

To support those affected, the government promised compensation for the families of the deceased and free medical treatment for the injured. Officials also vowed to hold everyone accountable once the investigation wraps up, aiming to restore calm in the wake of this Nepal protest violence.
