Chloé Zhao’s latest film Hamnet has just snatched the top prize at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the People’s Choice Award. This win is a big boost for its Oscar hopes, as Variety reports. It’s an exciting moment for fans of the director, who now makes history as the first to grab this award twice—following her 2020 triumph with Nomadland.
TIFF’s People’s Choice Award has long been a solid predictor for Oscar success, especially since the Academy widened the Best Picture category in 2009. Winners like Green Book in 2018 and Nomadland in 2020 went on to win big, while films such as The Fabelmans in 2022 played a huge role in awards season. The only flop? Where Do We Go Now? from 2011, which missed out on a Best Picture nod.
In the running this year, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein took first runner-up, and Rian Johnson’s Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery landed third. For documentaries, Barry Avrich’s The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue won hearts. The film dives into a former Israeli general’s heroic efforts to save his family during the October 7 attacks.
On the international front, Park Chan-wook’s South Korean satirical thriller No Other Choice claimed the People’s Choice International Award, beating out Joachim Trier’s Norwegian drama Sentimental Value as runner-up.
This 50th edition of TIFF sparkled with stars and buzz, even if it didn’t see the massive film sales of past years. Still, several movies are turning heads for potential distribution deals, including Steven Soderbergh’s The Christophers, Mona Fastvold’s The Testament of Ann Lee, and Daniel Roher’s Tuner, which critics are raving about.
