RSS trying to distort Sabarimala’s legacy: Kerala CM

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Monday that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is trying to turn the Sabarimala temple into a political controversy by ignoring the story of Vavar, a Muslim warrior who is an important part of the shrine’s tradition.

Speaking after opening the Communist Party of India (Marxist) office in Kannur, Vijayan pointed out that the legend of Lord Ayyappa includes Vavar as a devoted friend. “The RSS refuses to see that history,” he said. “They want to make Sabarimala a site of division.”

Vijayan warned that every vote for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would erode Kerala’s pluralistic culture. “If the BJP gains more votes, Kerala’s diversity weakens,” he added. The comment came after Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the BJP could win 25 % of the vote in local polls and take a majority in the state assembly.

The chief minister said the RSS ideology does not fit Kerala’s tradition. “If RSS gains power, our society can’t stay the way it is today,” he warned. He even referenced Onam, saying that the festival’s spirit would be lost under communal politics.

This push comes as the Kerala High Court’s special investigation team looks into the Sabarimala gold scam. One person has already been arrested, linked to ten accused across two cases. The Congress and BJP have called for a national inquiry and for the resignation of the state Devasom Minister V.N. Vasavan and other Travancore Devasom Board members, demands that the Vijayan government rejected.
