Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong Arrives in India for Key Diplomatic Visit
Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong landed in India late Tuesday evening for a three-day official visit, strengthening the close relationship between the two countries. This is Wong’s first trip to India since taking office, and he’s accompanied by his wife and a high-level delegation that includes ministers and senior officials.
On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Wong will meet for important talks to discuss bilateral cooperation. Wong will also visit Rashtrapati Bhavan to meet President Droupadi Murmu later in the day. The visit also includes paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat on Wednesday. Top Indian officials, including External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, will meet Wong during his stay.
The visit aims to sign several agreements across various sectors like finance, digital technology, skill development, civil aviation, maritime cooperation, and space science. These deals will boost collaboration and new partnership opportunities.
India’s External Affairs Ministry (MEA) highlighted Singapore as a vital partner, especially under India’s ‘Act East’ policy. The MEA also mentioned that during Prime Minister Modi’s recent visit to Singapore in September 2024, both nations upgraded their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP).
Coinciding with the 60th anniversary of India-Singapore diplomatic ties, Wong’s visit shows both countries’ commitment to growing their partnership even further. The leaders will review existing cooperation, discuss regional and global issues, and plan future collaborations.
In recent years, India and Singapore have focused on advanced areas like sustainability, smart manufacturing, digital innovation, connectivity, and space technology. Both countries are working together to face global challenges and build long-term resilience.
This visit follows the recent India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable held in New Delhi on August 13, where leaders reviewed progress in key areas such as healthcare, digitalization, skill development, and sustainability. They also identified new initiatives to strengthen their partnership further.
Overall, this visit underscores the strong and growing friendship between India and Singapore, promising new opportunities and closer ties in the future.
