Pakistan’s Election Commission (ECP) has set a new deadline for Punjab’s long‑delayed local government elections. The vote will take place in the last week of December 2025, after a two‑month delimitation process that starts next Thursday.
The decision came from a four‑member ECP bench. According to the order, which Dawn has released, elections will follow the Punjab Local Government Act 2022 and its rules. The ECP must finish delimiting polling areas within two months, then announce the election schedule. The province’s government has been given strict timelines, and any delay could prompt the ECP to issue orders directing the vote.
Earlier this year, the ECP had given the Punjab government three months to complete preparations for the local elections. No response was received, so the commission called the government’s local government secretary to explain the hold‑up. The bench that issued the new deadline includes Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, and members Nisar Ahmed Durrani, Shah Muhammad Jatoi, and Babar Hassan Bharwana.
In short, Punjab residents can expect to cast local government ballots in December 2025 after an intensive delimitation effort. The ECP urges all parties to stick to the new timeline, ensuring a smooth and timely election process.
