A woman believed to run a major drug‑trafficking ring that spans India and Myanmar was detained in New Delhi, officials said on Friday.
Police say the suspect, Lalchhuanthangi (50), who has a long criminal history, was arrested in Delhi after a joint operation by the Mizoram Police, Delhi Police and the Special Bureau. She is thought to be the key link in a network that moves large amounts of heroin and other drugs across the 510‑km border with Myanmar.
The move follows a separate arrest on Wednesday of Joseph Lianthangpuia (42) of Chanakya Place in Delhi. Lianthangpuia is linked to the biggest heroin seizure ever in Mizoram – 15 kg recovered from a vehicle on August 23 – and will be flown to Mizoram for further questioning.
Lalchhuanthangi was named as the main “forward link” in the case registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the Foreigners Act. Investigators say she helped the network that seized 7.422 kg of brick‑type heroin near Kudamsen Kai in the Champhai district on July 10.
The authorities have already arrested five people in connection with the same case. Prior to this arrest, Lalchhuanthangi spent 2014‑2022 in Thailand over a narcotics charge and was out on bail for a money‑scam case in Kerala in 2023.
Delhi’s police said the woman had lived in the capital for years but was tracked after months of surveillance. She will be brought to Mizoram following a transit remand from Delhi’s Dwarka Court.
Mizoram’s 11 districts, especially Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual and Serchhip, share a long, unfenced frontier with Myanmar—a major corridor for heroin and methamphetamine tablets. The arrest marks a significant step in the fight against transnational drug trafficking in the region.
