British MP John McDonnell has strongly urged an end to human rights abuses in Balochistan by Pakistani forces. Speaking at a key event in Geneva, he reaffirmed his support for the Baloch people and highlighted the need for self-determination as a core international human rights principle.
McDonnell shared these views on Tuesday at the 7th Global Balochistan Conference, organized by the Baloch National Movement (BNM). The gathering drew political leaders, human rights activists, and thinkers from around the world.
He explained his strategy: “We’ve teamed up with Baloch groups in the UK to arm MPs with solid facts. This helps us push government ministers to act.” The goal? To spotlight the human rights violations in Balochistan, the way Pakistan and China exploit the region’s natural resources, and the poverty and hardship it brings to locals.
From the UK’s standpoint, McDonnell called on the British government to step up. “Britain has a history here, and honestly, we’ve neglected it for too long,” he said. He pointed out that the current Labour government bears special responsibility. His team is making sure ministers hear real stories—names of those arrested, detained, or killed by Pakistani authorities—so no one can look away from the human cost.
McDonnell also noted the tools the UK has: aid to Pakistan and trade ties. “In Parliament, we’re asking straight questions—what can we do? Tie aid to human rights improvements or use trade leverage to back Baloch self-determination?” he added.
Looking ahead, he plans to ramp up efforts after the recent cabinet changes and a new Foreign Secretary. “We’ll hold meetings to craft a strong plan, working with Europe and others to pile on global pressure on Pakistan,” McDonnell said. This push will focus on protecting basic rights like life, free speech, assembly, and the freedom for Balochistan’s people to shape their own future.
