Johannesburg, Nov 22 (LatestNewsX) — In their second meeting of the year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South Korean President Lee Jae‑myung reaffirmed their determination to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries. They held the discussion on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Johannesburg, South Africa.
“Had a wonderful meeting with President Mr. Lee Jae‑myung of the Republic of Korea during the Johannesburg G20 Summit. This is our second meeting this year, indicative of the strong momentum in our Special Strategic Partnership. We exchanged perspectives to further deepen our economic and investment linkages,” PM Modi posted on X after the meeting.
The leaders had first convened in June, alongside the G7 summit in Canada’s Kananaskis area. That inaugural encounter laid out plans for joint work in commerce, investment, technology, green hydrogen, shipbuilding, and more.
On 18 June, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reported that Modi and Lee “reaffirmed their commitment to deepening India‑South Korea Special Strategic Partnership by exploring new avenues for cooperation through partnerships in areas of trade and economy, critical and emerging technologies” including “culture and P2P (people‑to‑people contacts), among others.”
Marking the tenth anniversary of the Special Strategic Partnership, President Lee expressed hopes of elevating bilateral relations to a new level “across the board”. He highlighted that about 550 Korean companies operate in India and urged the enhancement of high‑level dialogue while expanding collaboration in the economy, advanced technology, defence, the arms industry, and culture.
Earlier Saturday, Modi also met several world leaders on the summit sidelines, including British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, UN Secretary‑General António Guterres, Brazilian President Inácio Lula da Silva, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and others.
During the same visit, Modi launched the Australia‑Canada‑India Technology and Innovation (ACITI) Partnership with Australian leader Anthony Albanese and Canadian counterpart Mark Carney.
