Tragic Gas Tanker Explosion in Mexico City Kills 3, Injures Over 50
A massive explosion from a gas tanker truck rocked Mexico City on Wednesday, claiming three lives and injuring more than 50 people. Among the injured, 19 remain in serious condition, local authorities confirmed.
The incident unfolded around 2:20 p.m. on the Zaragoza road under the Concordia bridge in the Iztapalapa area. The tanker, carrying 49,500 liters of gas, overturned, sparking a huge blast that damaged 18 nearby vehicles and sent shockwaves through the neighborhood.
Mexico City’s head of government, Clara Brugada Molina, shared details on social media platform X. She said emergency teams quickly rushed the injured to various hospitals for urgent care.
Police swiftly secured the explosion site in Mexico City, setting up roadblocks to keep residents safe and allow investigators to probe the exact cause of the gas tanker accident. Authorities aim to uncover what led to this devastating event.
President Claudia Sheinbaum voiced her deep sorrow over the Mexico City gas explosion. In a heartfelt post on X, she wrote, "We stand in solidarity with the families of the three people who sadly lost their lives and with all those injured in the pipeline explosion in Iztapalapa."
She highlighted the coordinated response: "The National Coordination of Civil Protection, National Guard, Secretariat of Defence, and our network of government hospitals are working hand-in-hand with Mayor Clara Brugada Molina and Mexico City authorities to help everyone affected."
The President also praised the bravery of emergency responders tackling the aftermath of the tanker truck explosion. As investigations continue, the focus stays on supporting victims and preventing future gas tanker accidents in Mexico City.
