Opposition Leaders Criticize US President Donald Trump Over Comments on India and Prime Minister Modi
In a strong reaction to recent statements made by US President Donald Trump about India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, opposition leaders in India have accused both leaders of confusing the world and hurting India’s international image. They say Trump’s remarks show a lack of respect and undermine India’s position on the global stage.
Congress leader Manoj Kumar criticized Trump sharply. He said, “Trump calls PM Modi his friend, but then he criticizes India and says we are not doing the right things. It looks like US-India relations are at a breaking point. Trump and Modi are making fools of the world.”
Kumar questioned the contradiction in Trump’s words. “First Trump says India’s actions are not good, and then he calls Modi a great Prime Minister. How can a respected leader be involved in such mixed messages?” he asked.
He also pointed out Trump’s past actions, like hosting terrorists’ supporters after an attack in Pahalgam, which he says shows inconsistency. “Trump met people backing terrorists at the White House and hosted dinners with them. How can he call himself our friend after all this? It’s clear the world can see what’s happening. The Indian government should speak up more and not stay silent on these issues.”
Other opposition leaders also voiced their concerns. Mrityunjay Tiwari from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) said, “Trump says whatever he wants, anytime. PM Modi supported Trump during his election campaign, but now it’s clear Trump doesn’t respect India and has disrespected our country many times.”
Dharmendra Singh of the Samajwadi Party questioned the friendship. “If Trump was really a friend, why are there high tariffs hurting us? PM Modi should explain why the US is putting pressure on India.”
Interestingly, during a press conference at the White House on Friday, Trump appeared to soften his tone. He called Modi a “great Prime Minister” and reassured that the US-India relationship remains special.
Later, PM Modi responded on X (formerly Twitter), saying he “deeply appreciates” Trump’s words and sees the partnership between India and the US as “positive and forward-looking.”
This evolving exchange highlights the complex dynamics in India-US relations and the importance of strong leadership and clear communication.
