Trump declares ‘war is over’ as he heads to Gaza peace summit

Donald Trump announced the end of war over Gaza and is heading to Egypt for a major peace summit that will bring together world leaders to put a lasting stop to the conflict.

The meeting will take place in Sharm El‑Sheikh on Monday, following a brief stop in Israel. There, Trump is expected to sit down with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and speak before the Knesset.

The summit marks Trump’s first successful peace breakthrough in his second term. During the 20‑point plan he pushed, Trump secured a deal that trended both sides into a cease‑fire that stopped fighting in Gaza on Friday.

When the cease‑fire finally kicked in, Hamas agreed to release the remaining Israeli hostages through the Red Cross. Hamas has also laid out a timeline to hand over the bodies of about 20 hostages that died in custody.

The war began on Oct. 7, 2023, when Hamas forces stormed Israel from Gaza. The attacks left roughly 1,200 dead in Israel and took 251 hostages. Israel’s counter‑offensive, in turn, has killed around 67,000 Palestinians, according to Palestinian authorities.

Trump’s 20‑point peace framework was negotiated by officials from Egypt, Qatar and Turkey, with input from some Americans, including his son‑in‑law Jared Kushner.

In addition to Trump, the summit will host notable leaders: U.N. Secretary‑General António Guterres, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el‑Sisi, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the Qatar Emir, and Emirati officials. The summit’s co‑chairs, Trump and el‑Sisi, had invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but he will not attend; Kirti Vardhan Singh will represent India instead.

Trump is confident the cease‑fire will hold. “Everyone was cheering at one time, and that never happened before,” he said on Air Force One. He added that about 500,000 people in Israel celebrated the deal, along with crowds in Muslim‑majority countries.

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdel‑Atty expressed strong confidence that a new peace will take root. He revealed that Egypt is coordinating with Jordan to train and deploy a 5,000‑member Palestinian force in Gaza, intended to stabilize the region. The minister also indicated that an international force would need U.N. Security Council backing. While it may not become a formal U.N. peacekeeping mission, Arab and Muslim countries, including Indonesia, are reportedly ready to send troops.

Trump’s plan includes a “Board of Peace” chaired by him, with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair leading operations. The board would oversee Gaza’s reconstruction, as the United Nations says 80 % of the territory has been destroyed. Hamas will be barred from any governmental role, replaced instead by a body of qualified Palestinians and international experts.

The first priority, Trump said on Air Force One, is to get “people taken care of first.” He stressed immediate action while also building a foundation for long‑term stability.

As part of the deal, Israel has lifted its blockade of relief supplies into Gaza. The United Nations reports that trucks carrying food, medicine, and tents are now arriving to meet urgent humanitarian needs.

With leaders from five continents converging on Sharm El‑Sheikh, the world watches to see if the two‑year conflict can finally end and if a lasting peace for Gaza can be built.
