Three teenage boys were taken into custody in the killing of a 28‑year‑old Texas Marine veteran who was driving for Uber to help his family. The suspects were arrested after a Harris County investigation linked them to the Sept. 4 death of Quoc “Jake” Nguyen. Nguyen was found shot dead along a road, and investigators say the teens not only fired the shots but also stole his vehicle and other property before fleeing.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the first suspect, a 15‑year‑old, faces a capital murder charge. A 14‑year‑old and a 13‑year‑old have been charged with tampering with evidence. All three were booked into the Harris County Juvenile Detention Center within days of the arrest.
Nguyen was working as a rideshare driver for Uber at the time of his death. His brother, Matthew, told Fox Houston that Jake had just finished a trip to downtown when Uber confirmed that was the last time they heard from him. The Nguyen family moved from Vietnam to Houston several years ago, and Jake helped support his mother and sister.
Sheriff Gonzalez called the killing “tragic and senseless” on X, adding his condolences to Jake’s friends and family. He praised the work of the HCSO detectives, VCAT investigators, and the entire team involved in solving the case.
The investigation suggests the teens shot Nguyen and then stole his car. Police say they believe the victims were targeting a young veteran who was doing whatever work he could to put food on the table. The arrests are part of a broader effort to hold teenagers accountable for violent crimes that hit families and communities hard.
