Eight Americans were taken into custody in the Bahamas Tuesday after police cracked down on a suspect drug‑smuggling boat docked in Bimini, a chain of islands just 50 miles east of Miami.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) said officers from the Alice Town Police Station and the Bahamas Customs Department boarded the vessel around 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, acting on “intelligence” that the boat was carrying illegal weapons and chemicals.
The crew of ten—eight Americans, one South African and one Guyanese—were held for questioning. Their ages ranged from 21 to 62. Police did not name the arrested individuals. The RBPF said it is still investigating the case and has not revealed additional arrests or charges.
During the search, officers seized a haul of dangerous gear: three high‑powered rifles, 11 other firearms, a large ton of ammunition and a sizable amount of undeclared cash. The seizure points to a plot that could involve the trafficking of cocaine or other hard drugs through Caribbean waters.
The RBPF has not confirmed whether more suspects will be arrested. The investigation remains ongoing, and the U.S. State Department has yet to comment on the possible charges against the Americans.
Local authorities are working to keep the Bimini area safe from drug‑smuggling operations. The incident has sparked calls for tighter maritime security in the Caribbean, where traffickers often use small, fast vessels to evade law‑enforcement patrols.
