SC pulls up Centre, several states for non-functional CCTV cameras in police stations

New Delhi, Nov 25 (LatestNewsX) – On Tuesday the Supreme Court reprimanded the Centre and a number of state governments for not following its orders that every police station must have functioning CCTV cameras.

In a suo‑moto case titled “In Re: Lack of Functional CCTVs in Police Stations”, a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta noted that the Centre seemed to be treating the apex court “very lightly”.

The bench, led by Justice Nath, took up a news report that 11 people had died while in police custody in Rajasthan during the first eight months of 2025, with seven of those deaths occurring in the Udaipur division alone.

During the session, senior advocate Sidharth Dave, serving as amicus curiae, presented a detailed chart that demonstrated how states were doing with compliance.

Dave pointed out that most states had not yet established the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) necessary for installing, maintaining and preserving CCTV footage.
