Imagine stumbling upon a bear while shopping for groceries—that’s exactly what happened at a Fry’s supermarket in Oro Valley, southern Arizona. The unexpected visitor wandered right through the front doors on Monday, sending shoppers scrambling.
The black bear had been spotted lurking in the neighborhood over the weekend and even behind the store earlier that day. According to Darren Wright, a spokesperson for the Oro Valley Police Department, the curious animal bumped into the automatic doors before finally pushing its way inside.
Once in, the bear dashed around the aisles for a few minutes, startling everyone inside. “It just ran around,” Wright said. “I don’t think it did any damage.” Shoppers captured the chaos on video, including one clip showing a man checking his phone when the bear suddenly appeared just feet away. The startled guy looked up, and the bear bolted in the other direction.
At one point, the wildlife intruder poked around the produce section but didn’t snag any fruits or veggies. Luckily, no one got hurt, and the store avoided any major mess.
A nearby police officer rushed to the scene and helped guide people out safely. But once the bear slipped back outside, authorities lost sight of it. “We have had several bear sightings in Oro Valley,” Wright added. “We occasionally get them coming out of the desert. But this is the most interesting interaction we have had with one.”
Bear encounters like this highlight the wild side of living near Arizona’s deserts, where these animals sometimes venture into urban spots looking for food. If you spot a bear in your area, experts recommend staying calm, making noise, and giving it plenty of space.
