Claudio Neves Valente, a 48‑year‑old Portuguese national who had lived in the U.S. for more than twenty years, carried out a deadly attack at Brown University on December 13, 2023, before shooting a former MIT professor two days later.
He opened fire in a Brown lecture hall, killing two students and wounding nine others, then fled roughly 50 miles to Brooklyn, where he fatally shot 47‑year‑old Nuno Loureiro at the professor’s home.
The gunman’s connection to both institutions dates back to the mid‑1990s. Between 1995 and 2000, Neves Valente and Loureiro were enrolled together in a course at Portugal’s Instituto Superior Técnico, a fact confirmed by school officials.
In 2000, Neves Valente entered the United States on an F‑1 student visa and began a doctoral program at Brown that fall. He took a leave of absence in spring 2001, officially dropped out in July 2003, and, according to authorities, had no ongoing ties to the school when the shootings occurred. He would eventually earn U.S. permanent residency in April 2017.
Weeks before the incidents, Neves Valente rented a storage unit in Salem, New Hampshire, in November, and booked a hotel room in Boston near the month’s end.
He also rented a gray Nissan Sentra with Florida plates around December 1, which was seen on several occasions around the Brown campus through December 12.
After the Brown shooting, he changed his vehicle’s license plates, then traveled to Brookline on Monday to pursue his second victim.
Police reports and CNN coverage detail that Neves Valente was active throughout Thursday, the day before he was found dead. He died by suicide in the storage facility he had rented, bringing an end to the nearly‑week long manhunt.
The FBI released security footage showing the shooter moving through Providence, Rhode Island, on the day of the first attack, and images of his final act were later distributed by Reuters.
Despite efforts to explain his motives, the case remains shrouded in uncertainty, with U.S. Attorney Leah Foley noting that the shooter and the MIT professor were likely acquainted.
