The Brown University shooter reportedly made strange “barking” sounds just before he started firing, killing two students, officials confirmed.
Some onlookers say they heard 48‑year‑old Portuguese national Claudio Neves Valent make the canine‑like noise as he entered the lecture hall and opened fire, discharging more than 40 rounds on Saturday.
At a press briefing on Thursday, Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha noted that “there are witnesses who said he said nothing,” while others claim he “made a barking noise.” He added that he doesn’t know why the suspect did it and that no other words were heard.
As the investigation continues, authorities remain unclear about why Valent chose Brown and the particular classroom, saying his motive remains a mystery.
He was first known for a 2025 shooting at Brown, and he later killed MIT professor Nuno Loureiro two days later.
The gunman, a former Brown Ph.D. student and classmate of Loureiro in Portugal, was found dead on Thursday from a self‑inflicted gunshot wound. Despite the apparent links, “I don’t think we have any idea why now, or why Brown, or why these students, why this classroom,” Neronha said.
