The Providence Police Department is now looking for someone who was “in proximity” to the Brown University gunman who went on a killing spree last Saturday, shooting two students and injuring seven others.
To help pin down the suspect, the department posted several stills from new surveillance footage on X and asked anyone who recognized the individual to come forward.
“Investigators are asking for the public’s help in identifying and speaking to the individual shown in these photos who was in proximity of the person of interest,” the department wrote.
The person in the grainy video is wearing a blue jacket with a green hood, dark pants, and a light‑colored satchel dragged over the right shoulder. The same silhouette appears in earlier footage released by FBI Boston, which shows the suspect strolling down a suburban Providence street less than two hours before the shooting.
In the later clip, the suspect looks to his right, spots the backpack‑wearing individual, and then bolts down a side street around 2:16 p.m. on Dec. 13. Seconds later, the person carrying the backpack turns onto the same street and starts running.
The police say the investigation is still active and that they’re coordinating closely with the Rhode Island State Police, the Attorney General’s Office, the FBI, ATF, IRS, DEA, U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and the U.S. Marshals Service.
