Buffalo, NY, made headlines this week when the city pulled off a Guinness World Record by hosting the largest chicken‑wing eating competition ever. The bout took place on Dec. 20 at the Buffalo Convention Center during the Revelas Family Foundation’s annual fundraiser, “A Not So Silent Night,” which supports mental‑health outreach.
Some 499 wing‑consumers joined the food‑feast, a turnout that surpassed the previous best of 397 wings—set by Amazon Web Services in 2018. A certified Guinness World Records adjudicator was on hand to certify that the record had indeed been broken.
The competition’s star was competitive eater George Chiger, who finished the five‑minute race with an impressive 36 wings. “Wing King” Drew Cerza, the man who brands himself as the city’s definitive wing authority and who founded the National Buffalo Wing Festival, hosted the event and encouraged participants to dive in.
While the record‑setting event turned heads, it also celebrated the dish’s humble origins. The Anchor Bar in downtown Buffalo claims to have invented today’s iconic wing—an onion‑based vinegar dip with a kick of cayenne—in 1964. The city’s signature style continues to draw food lovers from around the world, and this latest milestone proved just how well the Buffalo Wing has earned its place in culinary history.
