A 73‑year‑old man named Howell Gene Penton is being held on a $200,000 bond after police allege that he tried to purchase a baby girl at an auction in Louisiana. The sheriff’s office says Penton approached a mother trying to sell her 10‑month‑old daughter in late December at the Angie Auction House, which sits roughly 120 miles east of Baton Rouge. He was caught in the act during a covert operation on Saturday involving the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office and local law enforcement. Penton now faces a charge of attempting to buy a minor, and no further details have been released about how he engaged with the mother or whether he knew her beforehand. The Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office has not yet provided additional information.
