Today’s PTA, tomorrow’s world.
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) in New York City have crafted a new plan: get their members into parent‑teacher associations and local community boards so they can steer city policy toward their far‑left vision, now that mayor‑elect Zohran Mamdani is set to take office.
In a story shared with Jacobin—the publication that calls itself the “leading voice of the American left”—DSA co‑chair Grace Mausser urged nearly 12,000 members to plant themselves in low‑level city institutions. “We must plug Zohran organizers and supporters into lower‑level city institutions en masse,” she wrote, citing the hundreds of semi‑governmental bodies that usually fall under more moderate influence, such as community boards, PTAs and education councils.
After their hard work helped Mamdani win both the primary and the general election, the DSA is now pressing members to take volunteer roles at libraries and parks whenever a city position isn’t available. Mausser says that capturing these grassroots posts gives the group a foothold from which they can roll out Mamdani’s agenda—even while Governor Kathy Hochul remains skeptical and “enemies” on the city and state levels keep pushing back.
Hochul, who had backed Mamdani and softened the Democratic establishment’s nerves, now finds herself targeted by the mayor’s socialist allies. Mamdani’s supporters have ripped into the governor with “Tax the Rich” chants at joint rallies, even though she publicly rejected his campaign promise.
Political insider Ken Frydman criticized the DSA, calling them “young, politically‑misguided revolutionaries” who are pushing a revolution onto January 1, 2026, and urged them instead to study the track record of past socialist movements before acting.
