Florida Family Tragedy: Husband Kills Wife, Stepson, and Himself After a Heated Argument Over an NFL Game
A harrowing incident in Polk County left one family dead, one injured, and another left to cope with unimaginable loss. According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the events began on December 22 when a 47‑year‑old man, Jason Kenney, began a violent assault against his wife, Crystal Kenney, after a heated debate about an NFL match.
The argument erupted when Crystal asked Jason to pause the Monday evening game—the clash between the San Francisco 49ers and the Indianapolis Colts. Kenney, who was intoxicated at the time, threw the situation into chaos. In the confusion, he shot at his wife, killing her, and then fired at his 13‑year‑old stepdaughter, wounding her in the shoulder and face. The young girl is currently recovering in a hospital.
Despite the severity of the shooting, the 12‑year‑old son—who was not present in the immediate scene—escaped unharmed. He ran to a neighbor’s house after hearing gunfire. A much‑younger child, the couple’s one‑year‑old daughter, was asleep in her crib when deputies arrived and was found unharmed.
Following the assault, Kenney fled the scene and called his sister in upstate New York, telling her, “I’ve done something wrong, and this is the last time we’ll talk.” Hours later, he drove to his father’s house, where police found him trying to exit a shed. In the struggle, Kenney fatally shot himself, ending the tragedy.
During the search of the family’s residence, deputies discovered a note left by Crystal. The note read, “You’re drinking, you’re using cocaine again. This is not the way the family should be. You need God,” according to Sheriff Grady Judd.
The surviving children are now in the care of their grandparents. Sheriff Judd reflected on the case, describing the scene as shocking: “When you go in there, there is a beautiful Christmas tree with lots of Christmas presents under it, just like the nuclear family should be.” The family’s loss and the impact on the entire community have left the Polk County homicide detectives deeply troubled.
