In Surat on Sunday, Meghalaya’s Akash Kumar Choudhary set a new record in the Ranji Trophy, sparking cheers from fans and commentators alike. The 25‑year‑old club opened his innings with a slow start, but then launched an explosive onslaught that saw him hit the fastest fifty in history for the format—achieving 50 runs in just 11 balls.
Akash’s dramatic finish also made him the third player ever in first‑class cricket to hit six sixes in a single over. In the 126th over of the match, the left‑arm spinner Limar Dabi delivered the ball to an Akash who struck eight consecutive sixes, a feat never before seen in this level of cricket.
Because of his quick bursts, Akash made history again by smashing eight straight sixes. His 11‑ball fifty surpassed the former record set by Leicestershire’s Wayne White in 2012, who reached 50 in 12 balls. Before that, the longest record had stood since 1965, when Clive Inman took 13 balls to hit his half‑century.
After coming in at number eight and playing a shaky start, Akash’s eight‑ball streak pushed his score past 50 with no wickets lost. His six‑six over puts him alongside greats such as Sir Garfield Sobers—who first did it in 1968 for Nottinghamshire—and former India all‑rounder Ravi Shastri, who hit six sixes in a single over back in the 1984‑85 Ranji season.
Akash has been playing first‑class cricket since his debut in 2019 and has appeared in 31 matches so far. He had scored 503 runs in his career with an average of 14.37 before this incredible performance, but his 2016 form already showed that he could surprise opponents with his power hitting.
The match, part of Meghalaya’s Plate Group in the Ranji Trophy, was against Arunachal Pradesh in Surat. Akash’s explosive display was a highlight of the day and a reminder that record‑breaking batting still thrives in India’s domestic circuit.
